Stamina Booster Dishes of Jeonju: Yeonji Bongwan and Yookil Sikdang

It seems like the winter still isn’t completely over. In such cold weather, people tend to go after the warm broth of stamina booster dishes. Today, I’ll introduce two stamina booster dishes of Jeonju certified by the local gourmets.

Yeonji Bongwan’s Udutang (ox scalp and bone soup)

Less than ten minutes’ walk away from Jeonju Gaeksa is Yeonji Bongwan, a restaurant famous for ox-based soup dishes and steamed meat dishes. This place is usually frequented by locals.

This restaurant has donated a portion of its profit to charity.

Udutang (ox scalp and bone soup) is a signature dish of Yeonji Bongwan. However, I also recommend ox rib soup and ox bone soup. Also, an order of alcohol is accompanied by a small steamed meat dish. A reason to drink soju here!

The soup is aromatic without any gamey smell, the meats are soft, and the broth isn’t fatty. What surprised me the most is the amount of meat in the soup. For meat lovers, this is the biggest reason to visit. I recommend eating the meat with chojang sauce (chilli pepper paste mixed with vinegar), just like the locals.

After the meal, a small yoghurt drink is served. If you’re driving, there’s a big parking lot next to the restaurant.

Yookil Sikdang’s Sweet Potato Sprout Gamjatang (pork bone soup)

Yookil Sikdang is a restaurant located in the Hyojadong district. The restaurant appeared many times in the major foodies shows. This venue has a huge parking lot, which is a big plus for people driving here!

Yookil Sikdang’s signature dish is sweet potato sprout gamjatang. In the photo you can see the huge pile of sweet potato sprouts over the huge pile of pork bone pieces. If you’re a big eater, you may order more of both.

Sweet potato sprout is low in calorie and high in fiber. Hence, it’s a good match with gamjatang. I loved the crunchiness of the sweet potato sprout. Also, the portion of the meat was big enough for meat lovers.

Finishing a bowl of rice was the easiest thing in the world with the soft meat on the bone plus savory and spicy broth. Highly recommended.
