The Young Entrepreneurs of Jeonju Nambu Market Chungnyun (Youth) Mall

I spent half a day at the Jeonju Nambu Market. It was a fun time visiting interesting venues at one of the oldest markets in Korea! Particularly, the second floor of the market is called the Chungnyun (youth) Mall. The venues are run my creative young entrepreneurs. If you’re on holidays in Korea and visiting Jeonju, it’ll be fun to visit here!

Daol Kongnamul Gukbap

The first venue is Daol Kongnamul Gukbap (bean sprouts soup with rice). I started early today, because this venue is only open till 1PM! In Korea, if a restaurant is only open till lunchtime, usually the dishes are guaranteed to be tasty.

I never expected that the venue would be so crowded. People were even waiting outside. I returned another day to take photos.

There are only two dishes on the menu, the kongnamul gukbap and the boiled squid.

The venue has the open kitchen. The ingredients seemed fresh. The flavor of the kongnamul gukbap was just right, not too garlicky or light. The bean sprouts were crunch enough too.

Chaekbang (bookstore) Todaktodak

I headed to Chaekbang Todaktodak. I took the stairs right next to Daol Kongnamul Gukbap to the upper floor of the Nambu Market. I could find the bookstore right away.

The bookstore owner’s touch is everywhere. This venue also sells unique and rare products of independent publishers. The owner takes a great care in selecting which books to sell.

After a brief and pleasant conversation with the owner, I was recommended books that fits my taste. The bookstore also hosts many cultural activities such as a reading club or a book talk.

There’s also a friendly cat in the bookstore. It didn’t bother me reading the book. It’s also fun to spot interesting goods in the store.

Chaekbang Todaktodak sells books at the discounted prices when compared to the big online bookstores. I ordered the books online in advance to spend more time here!

 Drawing Party

Drawing Party is a relatively new addition to the 2nd floor of the Nambu Market. The café sells fruits in a cup, juice, coffee, and the like. The customers can check the menu from the outside.

The inside seemed very cozy. The dolls, cushions, curtains, and other white-toned interior design things give the relaxing atmosphere.

These types of dolls seem popular these days. There are also a good range of desserts to choose from.

I ordered the kiwi banana juice. I loved the sourness of kiwi and the sweetness of banana. The juice seemed like a good alternative to a full meal.

Jeonju City’s Nambu Market seems to have a lot of interesting venues on its 2nd floor, in the Chungnyun Youth Mall. The interior of Drawing Party may have been inspired by some type of religion, but Daol Kongnamul Gukbap seems to be a legitimate restaurant frequented by locals (both young and old). Jeonju City is famous for cuisine such as gukbap (eaten by a lot of older Koreans), so I wonder why a restaurant such as Daol Kongnamul Gukbap would be located in a youthful mall area of Nambu Market. Chaekbang (bookstore) Todaktodak appears to be the most appropriate of the three venues introduced in this post. The bookstore owner appears to have an affinity for various types of publications and its advantage is selling vintage books at cheap prices. If I visit Chungnyun Youth Mall, the first venue I would visit would be Chaekbang (bookstore) Todaktodak.
