Jeonju Nambu Market Night Market, A Festival of Sweet Nights and Sensory Delights

December is marked by cold winds and mornings with temperatures often below freezing, continuing the trend of harsh weather. As the wind becomes more frequent, it feels colder, making thick clothing and scarves a necessity for outdoor activities.

As a child, I clearly understood why I followed my mother to the market in winter: it was for the snacks. The array of treats like steaming tteokbokki, sweet hotteok, warm fish cakes, and bungeo-ppang filled with red bean and sweet cream was incredibly tempting.

The market features a wide array of foods and sights. Today, I want to introduce the famous Jeonju Nambu Market Night Market. Located in Jeonju City, it offers an exciting experience like that of a tourist, especially after a stroll through the Hanok Village.

“Jeonju Nambu Market, Continuing the Legacy of the South Gate Market”

Jeonju Nambu Market is an age-old traditional market, upholding the history of the South Gate Market that once stood outside Jeonju Castle’s southern gate.

Currently, a variety of events are taking place at Nambu Market, situated near the Hanok Village, including the Young Mall and the Sky Garden.

Key attractions at the night market include yukjeon (pan-fried battered beef), ice cream, skewers, and tteokgalbi (grilled short rib patties), attracting large crowds.

“Tempting Foods That Stimulate the Senses”

The market is filled with delicious aromas from various foods being prepared, attracting the attention of passersby with their enticing scents.

Although night markets are common in various regions, I personally feel the scale and uniqueness of the Nambu Market Night Market stand out. While filming there, I couldn’t resist buying a freshly cooked sweet rice hotteok due to hunger.

The only thing you need for the Nambu Market Night Market is an empty stomach! This place is a paradise for food lovers, offering the joy of gradually filling up on a variety of delicious foods.

The Nambu Market Night Market’s stalls are arranged in a cross shape around the market center. This setup not only features unique and exciting foods but also allows visitors to enjoy watching the lively cooking process, adding to the fun of both tasting and sightseeing.

The torch-grilled dishes are a particular highlight, providing a visual treat as well as a distinctive charred flavor that’s simply delightful. In my opinion, Jeonju Nambu Market is an essential destination in Jeonju.
