Beautiful Hanok (Korean Traditional Building Style) Cafés in Jeonju: Onewwol, Haengwon, Myungcheonjae

Where to go when the tourist information center is closed?

When the Tourist Information Center is closed, visit the ‘Time Travel Café’ for rest and information. The city has designated seven cafes as the ‘Time Travel Café’: Wangui Jimil, Sangsang Café, Coffee Baljeonso, TEA and TORTE, Haengwon, Onewwol, and Myungcheonjae. We’re going to visit the last three cafes on the list today.

Café Onewwol

Walking through Jeonju Hanok Village is like time travelling to the past. There are almost 800 hanok (Korean traditional building style) buildings here.

Café Onewwol is located in a beautiful hanok built from the materials dismantled from more than 200 years old house.

The café also holds exhibitions, runs experience programs, and functions as a tourist information center. The visitors can also meet a cute puppy named Owol.

Onewwol
Address: Hyanggyogil 56, Wansangu, Jeonju
Contact: 063-284-2588
Menu: Omija tea, hongsi (ripe persimmon) smoothie, misutgaru (multigrain powder beverage)
Opening hours: 11:00~22:00

Haengwon

Haengwon is a café that used to be a high-end Korean restaurant for 90 years. Hence the place has a long history.

The premise is also the home to a pansori (Korean traditional long epic song style) master Seong Jun-suk. The house itself, frequented by the locals and tourists, is also registered as the city’s cultural property.

The venue used to host the song lessons. Even today, traditional musical performance (pansori, gayagum, daegum, etc.) is held every Saturday at 4PM.

This is the most popular summer dessert menu, the sweet pumpkin pat bingsu (shaved ice with red beans and other sweet toppings). The sweet pumpkin isn’t too sweet, so it goes really well with the sweet red beans. Also, the texture of the nuts and rice cake toppings were pleasant too.

I enjoyed the view of the beautiful garden while eating the sweet pumpkin pat bingsu. Visiting Haengwon felt like travelling to a distant destination.

Haengwon
Address: Pungnammun 3gil 12, Wansangu, Jeonju

Menu: Sweet pumpkin pat bingsu, sweet pumpkin, millet pancake, coffee, and more
Opening hours: 10:00~22:00 (closed on Mondays)

Myungcheonjae

Only five minutes away from Jeonju Hanok Village, Myungcheonjae is an hanok café next to the Jeonjuchun River.

The café has a wide green courtyard and outdoor tables. If you’re bored with the franchise cafes in the city, I recommend visiting Myungcheonjae. Families with children, in particular, will have great time here.

The hanok building of Myeongchunjae is from somewhere else. The owner brought and restored a hundred years old hanok building at the current location.

I ordered a lemonade and warm green tea. The freshly baked mini croissant looks very yummy.

The atmosphere of the café is very relaxing. There are artistic pieces on display here and there, so it seems like a gallery too. The café also offers local travel guide pamphlets.

Under the signpost saying ‘Time Travel Café’, there are different pamphlets for travelling Jeonju. When you need to rest your legs or are looking for a tourist information, remember the cafes registered as ‘Time Travel Cafes’. They will assist your travel back in time.

Thank you for introducing three of the seven designated ‘Time Travel Cafes’ in Jeonju City. The large green outdoor area of Myungcheonjae looks very appealing, but the golden nugget of this post appears to be Haengwon, where traditional music performances are held and there is a history of pansori. The sweet pumpkin pat bingsu looks exquisite at Haengwon!

Dear 💗 Jeonju The scenic beauty of Hanok Village wins my heart. I really like the cafes of this village. And my favorite cafe is Onewwol. I love the food of this cafe in whose pictures and descriptions I often see in my posts and the feeling of peace while eating gives me rest. And you can also see the great performance in this cafe. And meet a puppy named Owl. Here the puppy welcomes you as you enter the cafe. This is a quiet puppy. There is no need to be afraid of this.

A hanok (Korean: 한옥, 韓屋) is a traditional Korean house. … Hanok were first designed and built in the 14th century during the Joseon Dynasty. Korean architecture considers the positioning of the house in relation to its surroundings, with thought given to the land and seasons

I really loved 🤗🤗🤗this place and I would definitely visit here . Since its a hanok village, you can see many traditional Korean houses. Also you can wear Korean traditional clothes or old Korean high school uniforms or even vintage clothes of late 1900s while taking stroll in the neighborhood. How cute is that? Lot of beautiful buildings, cute cafes and delicious restaurants, loved the designs and architecture. Must visit place if you ever go to Jeonju.

I am interested in Jeonju Tour, it remains my resolve to do this tour. Visiting Jeonju Hanok Village is like a trip to heaven. There are about 800 hanok Korean traditional building styles, which are well appreciated. The buildings of the village are reminiscent of the times of old kings and queens, these buildings convey the traditions of Korea. Happiness showers in every corner of this village. I love the beauty of Cafe Onvol. It is located in a beautiful hanok built from materials destroyed from a house that is over 200 years old. The dishes served in these cafes are very good tasting and enjoyable. Travel safely and fast.

  • Anand Raj

    Dear @Jeonju 💗💗💗💗
The interesting thing with this Hanok Village is that it’s not just a constructed replica of an old traditional village. It is an active, alive part of the city! Plenty of blocks, full of traditional buildings, which are used for shops, restaurants, pensions, even for regular houses! You can spend a a lot of time walking in the small streets of the village, enjoying the wonderful traditional buildings and relaxing (when the area is not overcrowded!). It’s an oasis inside Jeonju City!

  • Manvi Singh

@Jeonjucity the food capital of korea have a unique history and the experience of this city is very exciting. 💝💝💝
Jeonju has many hanok (Korean traditional building) cafés boasting exquisite atmosphere. Imagine this, you’re sipping a cup of warm coffee with a piece of baked rice cake at a traditional hanok building while enjoying the view of the courtyard. The coffee would taste different. It might melt away the worries and busyness of the everyday life.
Café Onewwol offers a range of traditional Korean beverages and desserts.

    @Jeonjucity A great mix of things🤩🤩🤩
The hanok village is, at the same time, touristy and authentic. At its heart is an old (restored) shrine that once housed royal portraits. Around all of this, there are theatres, a few handicraft locations and an important catholic church.
Interwoven are tacky snack bars filled with Koreans.
    Culture and chaos together!
    Two notes:
Koreans (especially young women) love to hire traditional dress and wander around the village posing for photos.
Consider sleeping in a traditional style house (Stayhanok). A very good way to see the ebb and flow of the place.🎉🎉🎉🎉

  • Adnan Anand

I am the person who is very interested in exploring the Korean cities, tradition and heritageal culture. I hanok is the perfect place for that i really want to visit it. 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

It was an amazing sight to see many people walking around in traditional hanbok over there. A picturesque place to take many photos and enjoys lots of good food as well, Jeonju, the combination of history and delicacy,is one of the most typical cities in Korean style! You can see lots of special architectures right there, Hanok. And the scenery of maple is also wonderful

Thank you for this awesome article Dear @Jeonjucity team 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉

  • Rythem Hong

    Hyee, @Jeonjucity 💝💝💝💝💝💝💝
I love architecture and the Hanoi style so much that one of my hobbies is to keep searching for coffee shops on Kakao Maps to see if I find any rare hidden gems like these 😍

The best part about Jeonju is that it feels like a piece of history restored. The hanoks are a must if you go to Jeonju. Take a time off to indulge in the serene environment as you sip in some warm coffee( or a cool drink) and relax in the atmosphere. It’s one of the best feelings ever. A must to try, if you are going to Jeonju .

  • Tofeek khan

    A quiet garden
I would suggest to visit the hanok village , it is one of the most important korean heritage place. The palace hosts the only availability portrait offerte the first korean emperor . Furthermore a nice garden with a bambù forest is visitable
