Joella Gamyeong Moonlight Feast!

Jeolla Gamyeong was a workplace for the provincial governor in charge of administrative and judicial services of Jeolla Province and a location for holding a feast for guests.

Jeolla Gamyeong, which is similar to today’s provincial office building, was a headquarter of the provincial governor in charge of administrative and judicial services of Jeolla Province, one of the historical Eight Provinces of Korea during the Joseon Dynasty.

In the old days, it’s said that performances took place in honor of guests visiting Jeolla Gamyeong. In line with this, a Welcoming Banquet is being held every weekend evening from Jan.18 until the first week of March 2025 with a view to make this place more accessible to both travelers and local residents of Jeonju.

Before visiting to “Jeolla Gamyeong Moonlight Feast”, I reserved my ticket in advance through Ticketlink website.

On-site ticket purchases are also available one hour before the program begins, so make sure to call beforehand to see if there are seats left for the performance.

At the entrance of Jeolla Gamyeong, I had my ticket checked and received LED sunglasses instead of an admission ticket.

These LED sunglasses are likely provided to help guide participants handily since the program occurs after sunset.

A round of tour is conducted in three teams of around 10 people each. The first entry starts at 6:00 PM, and the second one at 7:30 PM, with 30 participants per tour. Make sure to check the schedule and apply for the program accordingly.

When you enter, ‘Jeolla Governor’ and ‘Jang Geum’ are welcoming us.

Starting with explanations about Paeseok, a stone that played a role similar to a Petition Drum, allowing people to voice their complaints, and Pyoseok, a stone used to encourage criminals repent their wrongdoings, Jeolla Governor provides an easy-to-understand explanation of the historical significance of each building of Jeolla Gamyeong.

At Naea, the living quarters where Jeolla Governor once resided, we had a chance to taste Moju (a traditional Jeonju liquor) and a pancake mixed with ingredients including bean sprouts, water celery, and zucchini, one of Jeonju’s top 10 gourmet dishes. The bean sprout pancake was quite savory with a rich combination of water celery and dried shrimp.

This set of cuisine is so-called “Gamyeong table of drinks and snacks”. We kept ourselves warm in the cold weather with experience of making and tasting our own snacks. Adults drank Moju and children had jujube tea, filling their stomachs.

Following this, we experienced “Gamyeong Gabae” coffee time at Seonhwadang which served as a workspace for Jeolla Governor.

Coupled with the story that Emperor Gojong, the last king of the Joseon dynasty, was the first king to enjoy coffee in Korea, the barista instructed us to grind coffee beans with a mini grinding stone. While brewing drip coffee, we savored its fragrant aroma and also enjoyed gayageum zither performance.

After sharing a relaxing moment with friends and family over tea, we had a chance to wear a wide selection of traditional hanbok and took fantastic photos captured by a professional photographer in the course of “Gamyeong Photo” experience.

During this brief moment given under the night sky, I created a lasting memory at the photo spot of Jeolla Gamyeong.

I thought the entire program was over, but the final occasion, “Gamyeong EDM Time” was still ahead rendered by Jeolla Governor. The LED glasses presented as a permission ticket came into play at last.

While we were finding delight in Korean aesthetic from exhilarating music with DJ of Gwanpunggak, a traditional pavilion beside Seonhwadang and participating in Ganggangsullae dance, the whole schedule closed to the end.

The 1.5- hour program was really exciting and fulfilling. Above all, we had such a great time thank to Jang Geum who brighten up the mood throughout her guidance.

During this event period, why not pay a visit to Jeolla Gamyeong with friends, your loved ones, or family to capture memories of a winter night?
