Jeonju Travel: The Allure of Pungnam-dong – ‘Jaman Mural Village’

I encountered a mural village that conjured up my childhood memories in Pungnam-dong, Jeonju.

One spring day with blooming flowers, I ran into Jaman Mural Village while taking a stroll around Jeonju Hanok Village. Enchanted by the colorful murals from the entrance and the attractive neighborhood scenery that brought back my old memories, I took a walk around.

In Jaman Mural Village, mural artworks that blend well with the surrounding environment have been created around 40 houses situated along the alleyways.

These murals featuring various dynamic themes such as nature, flowers, and scenes from fairy tales make me smile when I just look at them.

I took some research on Jaman Mural Village and found out that this town was created by refugees who settled here during the Korean War.

Over time, vacant houses increased, and then local residents and public institutions made efforts to generate the current mural village.

From the uphill path, characters from nostalgic cartoons greet you while evoking old memories.

With these figures reviving childhood innocence, this route was so pleasant to walk during my trip to Jeonju.

Such a mural village in the inner city seems to emerge as a resting place for both locals and tourists visiting Jeonju.

Jaman Mural Village has cafes, craft studios, and even accommodations like guesthouses.

Since it’s located near Hanok Village, I really suggest that visitors to Jeonju make sure to experience this neighborhood.

As I was climbing the uphill road where tulips greeted me, I approached some place wondering what the space was for. It turned out to be a cafe giving off the vibe of Jeju Island, so I went inside for a moment.

Jaman Mural Village being situated on the hill, it felt so refreshing to stop by the café for a bit while walking.

There are several more cafes further up the hill, so it would be a nice idea to enjoy some delicious desserts or drinks along with mural viewing.

Designed to match the unique vibe of the mural village, these cafes also had colorful and pretty exteriors for making perfect photo zones, so my commemorative photos turned out handsomely.

Besides the murals and cafes, Jaman Mural Village gives you a chance to get a glimpse into the residents’ lives and everyday routines of the village.

Beyond just appreciating murals, it felt meaningful to witness the outcome achieved by the local artists and community. You can also reflect on the meaning of the mural village that brought new life to a once-declining village,

As you walk along Jaman Mural Village, the path leads to Omokdae and Imokdae, making it a great spot for a Jeonju trip as well as a walking path. Whichever way you go, you can enjoy a wonderful scenery of Hanok Village and Pungnam-dong.

Along with the vibrant murals, it seemed like spring flowers welcomed me.

Even the cute cats felt like greeting me as if they were pleased to see me in their neighborhood.

While wandering around Jaman Mural Village, I met people creating artwork in the workshop owned by a resident and had a small talk with them.

Seeing their warmhearted expression when they explained the details of Jaman Mural Village and the Pungnam-dong neighborhood, I could feel true affection about the area. It hit me that next time I visit this place again, I should come with my parents, who hold more memories from the past.

It would be a good option to go from Pungnam-dong to the bustling Hanok Village, but why not visiting the healing Jaman Mural Village to take beautiful photos against the backdrop of the murals and to capture precious memories while reminiscing about old times?

※ Jaman Mural Village is a residence area where local people actually reside, so please keep that in mind and observe etiquette while looking around quietly!
