Hagindang Residence from the K-Drama ‘Mister Sunshine’

For two years in a row, the city of Jeonju has chosen beautiful local gardens managed by the residents. This year, the city chose Hagindang as one of the most beautiful gardens in the city. More than a century old, Hagindang is an old residential space that appeared in a popular K-drama ‘Mister Sunshine’.

The historic ‘Hagindang’

Located in Jeonju Hanok Village, Hagindang is one of the most famous old residences in the village.

Hagindang is built by Baek Nak-jung, with the blessing of the Emperor Gojong of Korea. The residence was completed in 1908 and has supported local artists’ activities since then.

Hagindang became even more famous due to the popular drama ‘Mister Sunshine’. The space has an overwhelming atmosphere.

The garden of Hagindang is centered on a small pond surrounded by the trees and flowers of various sizes.

The pond used to be a small well. According to feng shui (the art of harmonizing humans and the surrounding environment), the well is vital for the well-being of the residence and the locality. Hence, the well was turned into a natural spring-pond. The water is very cold that, during summer, it was used as a fridge.

The pond is surrounded with rocks. From higher above, the pond resembles the Korean Peninsula. The shape of the pond expressed the anger at the colonization in the early 20th century.

The red flowers of the crape myrtle trees were blooming. The old pine trees seemed to testify the history of the space.

Hagindang rents the space for photo shooting, traditional experiences, or accommodation. It feels like travelling back in time. Any spot you sit will produce great photos.

If you want to experience an authentic hanok (Korean traditional house), visit Hagindang. The beautiful garden offers relaxing environment for everyone.

As I saw local people of Hagindang village are very disciplined and Hard working. They have well maintained that village gardens beautifully. All flowers, plants and tree 🌲🌲🌲🌲 are green, flowers are hanging in flowers plants and bushes are charming. That’s are the symbol of good maintenance practices imported for maintenance of parks and gardens of area. It is symbolising the beauty of jeonju City and examplary behaviour of citizens of city. It is showing people motivation is very good and positive. Keep it up. You are examples for rest of Korea and world.

Insightful commentary when the blogger observes that the shape of the pond intentionally resembles the Korean peninsula at the end of the Joseon Dynasty. Hagindang’s pond and trees create a nostalgic atmosphere and a glimpse into the Japanese colonial period. Hagindang is a living example of Korea’s past. Perhaps this is the reason why Emperor Gojong allowed Hagindang to be built in Jeonju City’s Hanok Village.

Just found out that this residence is not only the oldest Korean house in Jeonju Hanok Village, but it was also built by the same master builder and carpenter who took part in building the palaces! Would definitely love to experience staying in this kind of place and be transported back into time.
