Colorful Gingko Trees at Jeonju Hyanggyo (Confucian School)

I headed to Jeonju Hyanggyo (Confucian School) to see the famous giant gingko trees. The temperature is going down and the days are getting shorter, but Jeonju Hanok Village is still beautiful in the autumn rain.

Hyanggyo is government-run provincial Confucian schools that were established during the Goryeo Dynasty (918-1392) and Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910). Jeonju Hyanggyo was originally built in 1354, during the Goryeo Dynasty.

Jeonju Hyanggyo is renowned for the old and giant gingko trees. The biggest ones near the main building are the most famous. With the leaves turning bright yellow, they are more beautiful than ever in autumn.

I arrived quite early, around 9 in the morning. But there were already a number of photographers taking photos and videos of Jeonju Hyanggyo and its gingko trees.

Even when alone, walking over the carpet of yellow gingko leaves was quite pleasant. Also, I tend to discover new buildings and corners every time I visit, probably because the site is quite big.

I exited through a small gate open towards the walled alley. The gingko trees rose above the wall. The leaves weren’t completely yellow yet.

The yellow with bit of green was also nice, but the leaves will turn full yellow in about one to two weeks. There’s still time to appreciate the autumn gingko trees in Jeonju Hanok Village!

Thanks to 성태민 for sharing the wonderful photographs of Jeonju Hyanggyo during autumn season. I did not know that gingko trees are often planted nearby hyanggyos. That is really interesting because the trees repel insects and is symbolic of Joseon Dynasty scholars mindset.

Autumn is peaking with colorful leaves. If you’re visiting Jeonju Hanok Village this autumn, don’t miss this great autumn spot: Jeonju Hyanggyo (Confucian School)

It’s estimated the giant gingko tree is around 420 years old. The tree is 10.4m in girth and 32m in height. People suspect that the tree was planted in 1603, when Jeonju Hyanggyo moved to the current spot.

It’s customary to plant gingko trees at hyanggyos (Confucian schools) around Korea. This is because gingko trees symbolize the spirit of seonbi, the Confucian scholars. As gingko trees that repel insects, the Confucian scholars should not be corrupted.

The Myungryundang building is known as very instagrammable spot in autumn. Traditional weddings and other cultural and educational events are also held here.

October and November are the best month to visit Korea. The weather is sunny, cool and crisp, this is the best time to experience the beauty of Korea fall foliage. The peak fall foliage in Korea is mid-October but south part of Korea always start from late October until mid November. The fall foliage when leaves color change around 20%, and the peak when the color reaches 80%. At the peak time, Ginkgo trees and maple trees throughout Korea change their hues to yellow and red.
If you are already enjoyed the fall foliage in Seoul and some popular places such as Nami Island, Seoraksan Mountain and Naejangsan Mountain. This time you should explore something special.

Hi everyone! I have just been in Korea for only two months. And guess where I went on my first weekend getaway? It is Jeonju! Initially, I had only heard from others that Jeonju is rich in cultural experiences. After spending time there ,and it is all been worthwhile!! In many aspects, Jeonju exceeded my expectations, especially the food (bibimbap), traditional korean cloth (Hanbok), classic architecture building, and these vibrant Ginko trees! I have included a picture of me dressed in Hanbok in front of a Ginko tree!! One day is insufficient for me to visit here and I regret not discovering this blog sooner. I plan to return to Jeonju again and see the museum and other places mentioned in this blog. You guys are amazing!! https://uploads.disquscdn.com/images/8f9479f8a96ae4c43c89a644a8da1e3c0ae4c4552f4b1978d50e45e25cca0b4d.jpg
