A recommendation on a secret route near Jeonju Hanok Village for moviegoers

If you are a film lover, here is a must-visit location in Jungang-dong near Jeonju Hanok Village that you shouldn’t miss out on.

Jeonju International Film Festival (JIFF) is annually held in Jungang-dong, Jeonju, South Korea.

Since its inception in 2000, this event is about to celebrate its 26th edition in 2025.

During the festival period, you can enjoy a diverse range of independent films throughout Jungang-dong adjacent to Jeonju Hanok Village.

However, do you know that Jeonju has multiple hidden sites where film buffs can visit in ordinary days?

If you’re fond of movies in your daily routine, I highly recommend three must-go spots for film enthusiasts.

The first venue I want to introduce is Jeonju Film Library.

Situated on the second floor of Jeonju YeongHwa Hotel, this space offers spacious seating, large windows, and scores of seats, serving as a café and library where you can savor restful time while enjoying drinks and movies every time you visit.

Movie posters and magazines are available for browsing and individual seating areas are provided to watch DVDs.

The large windows which present views from all directions allow you to appreciate the outside scenery while drinking coffee. When you’re not in the mood to see a movie, you can read books or engage in your tasks in this café and library.

According to the introductory article delivered by Jeonju Film Library, this place houses Korean and international specialized research and educational data including rare materials such as around 15,000 video materials, 3,400 specialized books, and about 2,000 film-related magazines acquired through voluntary donations from movie makers who advocate for the cultural project of Jeonju YeongHwa Hotel.

There are group seats available, making it a perfect place for special occasions.

The staff’s recommendation were a blending tea and a summer latte, but I ordered a green tea instead because it paired well with a madeleine which I felt inclined to eat.

When daylight fades, the shape of Jeonju Film Library illuminated by glow of sunset looks so fabulous.

Jeonju Cine Complex is home to the administrative office for making arrangements for JIFF. In its fourth-floor theater, a range of independent films are being screened.

According to the introductory article presented by Jeonju Cine Complex, under the management of JIFF Organizing Committee, this film center serves as a comprehensive cultural complex where there is “Digital Film and Video Integrated Solution Technology Center” outfitted with post-production facilities such as the “Digital Color Correction Room” and “HD Video Editing Room”. This place is also equipped with “Jeonju Digital Independent Cinema”, the only dedicated independent art movie theater in Jeonbuk-do as well as “Reading Room” which provide various film books to browse and VOD services for independent art films and Korean classic movies.

If you wish to discover and savor diverse charms of art movies rather than popular ones, this is the right place to come.

As a certain film you missed watching during JIFF is sometimes re-screened at Jeonju Digital Independent Cinema, make sure to check the screening schedule before booking a ticket.

You can reserve a ticket online or directly purchase one at the ticket booth, so keep that in mind.

In the film theater on the 4th floor, a wide range of indie films are played with a monthly screening schedule posted like this, allowing you to choose what to see.

The admission fee is 7,000 won for adults.

Both numerous commercial and indie cinemas are presently being screened at Joy N Cinema and Jeonju Cinema Town.

If you’re a Jeonju citizen, here’s a piece of news you should pay attention to.

The ticket prices of these two theaters range from just 7,000 to 8,000 won for adults.

Considering that we feel the pinch of the rising cost when viewing a film, the price is quite affordable in Jeonju.

You have to pay 7,000 won for a movie ticket at Jeonju Cinema Town and 8,000 won at Joy N Cinema.

When you wish for seeing a movie during your trip to Jeonju Hanok Village, remember to visit these theaters since not only indie film but also popular ones are shown there.

Though not all financial films are distributed here and the screening has a short time limit, most of box-office hits seems to be played.

I booked my ticket online earlier to see the film at Joy N Cinema.

The cinema hall inside this theater is furnished with tables to place your popcorn on and the price for popcorn set is quite modest at 4,000 won.

All the three routes for cinephiles that I’ve introduced today can be reached within a 10-minute walking distance.

If you plan a visit to Jeonju Hanok Village or when you’re traveling to Jeonju, mind that you stop by these three spots for film lovers to enjoy the feel of Jeonju as City of Films.

And here’s another tip for you. The year 2026 will see a launch of a cultural complex for filmmakers named as “Jeonju Independent Film House”.
