A festival for book-loving citizens, the Jeonju Reading Festival

A festival for book-loving citizens
“Jeonju Reading Festival”

Last weekend, I dove into the world of autumn and books at the Jeonju Reading Festival.

With the declining number of readers and ongoing pessimistic narratives about the end of books, the recent Nobel Prize in Literature awarded to author Han Kang might reignite an interest in reading.

At the Jeonju Reading Festival, I could feel some of this excitement firsthand.

This event went beyond simple book introductions and lectures; the numerous booths provided immersive book-related experiences that were particularly striking.

Children queued for various games while adults explored the booths and exhibitions by fellow citizens.

Even though books can be purchased online at any time and YouTube is flooded with book-related content, interacting directly with creators and other book lovers face-to-face felt uniquely refreshing.

The festival brought scattered book enthusiasts back together, revitalizing their desire to engage with books for enjoyment.

Known as The City of Libraries, Jeonju is dotted with unique libraries and actively collaborates with local bookstores.

At this book fair, six local bookstores showcased special merchandise.
It was a pleasure to see some bookstores I had previously visited!

The venue also featured an intriguing area to write in your ‘Diary of Gaps.’
Writing down your emotions following the prompts was popular among both adults and children.

At the next book fair, I look forward to entering the citizen competition and experiencing the joy of winning.

Until then, I plan to make frequent visits to the library to sustain the joy of reading.
See you at the next Reading Festival!
