Experience the Post-Korean War Era at Jeonju Nanjang

How do you feel like travelling back in time to the post-Korean War era of Jeonju? Aren’t you curious what the everyday life of your old Korean neighbors was like then? This week, I’ll introduce ‘Jeonju Nanjang’.

What is Jeonju Nanjang?

Jeonju Nanjang is located near Dongmun Sagori, next to Jeonju Hanok Village. Jeonju Nanjang is a hands-on museum focusing on the modern/post-Korean war folk culture (mostly the 1950s~the 1980s). The definition of the word ‘Nanjang’ is a special market opening for a limited period, distinguished from a regular market.

25-year-old collections in one place

The owner of Jeonju Nanjang has been collecting the things that remind us of the modern Korea for 25 years. The collection brings up fond memories of childhood to many visitors to Jeonju Hanok Village.

12 sections of Jeonju Nanjang

Jeonju Nanjang consists of twelve sections: childhood, mothers, youth and dating, dabang (café/tea room), military service, watermill (traditionally known as a scene of secret love affairs), cinema, county stores, and the like.

Those in their 20s and 30s see the exhibitions of Jeonju Nanjang with the eyes of novelty and curiosity. Yet, for those in their 40s, 50s, and 60s, the exhibitions remind them of their childhood and youth.

I could actually dance to the old music at ‘Gogojang’ (dance hall), play the famous old games at the arcade, and practice archery too. If you’re wondering where to travel this weekend, why not visit Jeonju Nanjang to find out, in a hands-on way, what the everyday life was like in the post- Korean war Korea?

Jeonju Hanok Village is a great place to visit.

  • Bharat

Jeonju is a historical site for more than just the village.

  • Bharat

There is also a shrine to the Joseon kings/dynasty.

  • Bharat

There is lots of history here. This Hanok displays the wealthier, more “urban/city” upper class historical living.

  • Bharat

The aristocratic way of historic Korean life. The actual Hanok is surrounded by traditionally-designed shops where you can rent hanboks (traditional Korean formal wear) and restaurants.

  • Bharat

Many Hanbok shops can do matching couples. They are very beautiful. The more modern part/city of Jeonju surrounds the restaurants and shops

  • Bharat

. If you’re interested in seeing a more rural, “middle/lower” class Hanok, this is not the place.

  • Bharat

Go to the Nagan Hanok in Suncheon if you want to see that side of Korean Historical living.

  • Bharat

Though it is called Hanok Village, there aren’t such traditional Hanok houses; instead there are several fancy street shops and restaurants in every corner.

  • Bharat

Many young people are seen wearing Korean traditional dresses and walking on the streets and taking photos. This place is just like other commercial streets in Korea.
